At Kawakibi School, we recently embarked on an exciting educational adventure, exploring the journey of cassava from the garden to our plates. Our students had the opportunity to visit a local cassava garden, where they learned about the plant’s various parts and their uses. They discovered that every part of the cassava—from leaves to roots—holds value for human consumption.
The children also got hands-on experience by planting cassava trunks, learning that the plant must be positioned correctly to grow properly. They enjoyed the process of harvesting cassava, pulling the roots from the soil and experiencing the fruits of their labor firsthand.
Back at school, the children brought their harvested cassava home, cooked it, and prepared healthy snacks for their families. The experience culminated in a beautiful lesson about sustainability and the purposefulness of creation.
To support the local cassava garden, our students and their families contributed donations, ensuring that the garden can continue to thrive and possibly introduce more plants for future learning adventures.
This hands-on experience not only educated our children about healthy food but also instilled a sense of appreciation for nature and community.
As we reflect on this enriching journey from garden to plate, we are reminded of the profound wisdom and purpose in nature’s creation. At Kawakibi School, we believe that nurturing a deep connection with the environment and fostering a sense of community not only promotes healthy living but also instills values that will last a lifetime. Together, we cultivate not just crops, but also a spirit of gratitude, respect, and care for the world around us.
